When we take a step back and analyze the different design trends over the years, the statement “fashion always repeats itself” couldn’t be truer, even with interiors. Between the modern, traditional, and midcentury, we notice similar looks that we have all seen before, maybe just in a different way. I am finding that mixing of new and old, vintage and trendy, clean lines and movement, is really appealing these days. We really love this idea because it creates a more lived in and worn aesthetic, while still staying on trend. We gathered a few looks, or parings of décor that help achieve this overall vision below.

Old, wooden China hutches or buffet tables

Don’t throw these away or leave them on the front of your driveway with a “free” sign anymore. Keep that piece of furniture and give it new life by replacing the door handles, fresh paint, or even replace the glass (if any). Inside or on top, add new vases and bowls with a modern feel (straight lines, clean shape), group candle sticks together, stack books, any kind of books. Vintage pot with fresh foliage is a great way to add that pop of color. Fun statues or sculptures is always a unexpectable way to add a unique shape or size to a display to keep your eye interested.

Ribbed or pleated textures

This is a fun one for just about anywhere. Ribbed kitchen hood-built outs, soap dispensers, master bedroom accent wall, pots/vases, and so many more. This would be a good spring project if you’re looking to update a small, or large space by giving it a beautiful new vocal point! Or, just need a new texture to introduce on the entry table or just in the powder bath. Keep your eye out for this mid-century vibe to add to areas of your home.

Dark and moody tones

As much as we love white anything and everything in homes, we also love and appreciate moodier spaces. Have a coffee or wet bar? Paint those cabinets a deep navy blue or dark emerald green! This will quickly elevate the space and give it a much more ritzy look. To elevate the dark paint even more, you could add Wainscotting, shiplap/slat walls, or wallpaper to really create the “wow” factor! This would also work really well in a powder bath or dining room. It may feel risky but, painting the walls and ceiling of a space like this in a dark color help differentiate the space from other areas while still allowing it to compliant the rest of the house. We will definitely be incorporating this in our next remodel.
