How to properly make a bed

Piecing together a bed with bedding, blankets, and pillows involves considering both functionality and aesthetics. Here's our step-by-step guide to help you create a well-styled and inviting bed for any bedroom.

  1. Start with a fitted sheet. Begin by placing a fitted sheet over the mattress, ensuring it fits snugly and is smooth.

  2. Add a flat sheet or a top sheet. Place a flat sheet or a top sheet over the fitted sheet, tucking the bottom end tightly under the mattress. For a crisp and polished look, fold the top edge of the sheet over the blanket or duvet cover, creating a decorative fold known as a "hospital corner."

  3. Layer a quilt, blanket or duvet. Add a blanket or duvet on top of the sheet. Make sure it is centered and hangs evenly on all sides. Smooth out any wrinkles or creases.

  4. Insert duvet cover. If using a duvet, insert it into a duvet cover and secure the corners and edges. Shake and fluff the duvet to distribute the filling evenly. For a neat and tidy appearance, fold the top edge of the duvet cover back over itself to expose a decorative trim or pattern.

  5. Arrange pillows. Place your sleeping pillows against the headboard or lay flat on mattress, followed by your decorative pillows. Start with two to four sleeping pillows, stacked neatly and lined up against the headboard. Then, layer decorative pillows in various sizes, textures, and patterns in front of the sleeping pillows.

  6. Bring in the euro shams. Euro shams are large square pillows, can be placed behind the sleeping pillows or used as decorative accents in front of them. They add height and a luxurious touch to the bed.

  7. Add Accent Pillows. By adding a few smaller accent pillows in front of the euro shams or in between the decorative pillows. These can be in contrasting colors or patterns to add visual interest.

  8. Finish with a throw. Place a throw blanket at the foot of the bed for an extra layer of texture and color. Drape it casually or fold it neatly in a horizontal or diagonal position.

  9. Adjust and fluff. Step back and assess the overall arrangement of the bed. Adjust and fluff pillows, fold blankets, and smooth out any wrinkles or bulges to achieve a balanced and inviting look.

Remember, there are no strict rules when it comes to styling a bed. Feel free to experiment with different textures, patterns, and colors to reflect your personal style and create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
