Our guide to hanging drapery
Hanging drapery properly can significantly enhance the look of your windows and the overall aesthetic of your room. Here's our step-by-step guide to help you hang drapery in your home:
Measure Your Windows:
Start by measuring the width and height of your windows. Determine how far above the window frame you want the drapes to hang (usually a few inches above the frame) and how far below the window you want them to extend (they should reach the floor).
Choose Curtain Rods:
Select curtain rods that are sturdy enough to hold the weight of your drapes. The rod should be wider than the window to allow the drapes to be pulled back and not block too much of the window when open.
Select Curtain Length:
Choose drapes that are long enough to reach the floor or slightly puddle on the floor for an elegant look. If you prefer a more modern style, you can have the drapes hover just above the floor.
Position the Brackets:
Install the curtain rod brackets above the window frame, according to your desired height. Make sure the brackets are level and evenly spaced.
Install the Rods:
Slide the drapery panels onto the curtain rod and then place the rod onto the brackets. Make sure the panels are evenly distributed on the rod.
Adjust the Length:
If necessary, adjust the length of the drapes by hemming them. Hemming ensures that the drapes don't drag on the floor.
Center the Drapes:
Make sure the drapes are centered over the window. They should cover the window when closed without blocking too much of the glass.
Allow for Overhang:
When the drapes are closed, they should extend beyond the edges of the window frame. This prevents light from seeping through the sides and provides a more finished look.
Adjust Pleats or Folds:
If your drapes have pleats or folds, arrange them neatly and evenly. Use curtain rings with clips if necessary to achieve a polished appearance.
