Prioritizing Remodeling/Repairs Costs

Let’s be real, we are living in unprecedented times in more ways than one. Housing is through the roof, inflation is at record highs, world conflicts are affecting supply chains, etc. It seems as if over the last couple years there has been a compounding of events and economic shifts that are affecting peoples’ every-day living. Michaela and I joke sometimes that it seems like you cannot go to the store and not walk out spending $100 at the minimum, even if you’re just buying a handful of items for dinner and a bottle of wine.

What does this have to do with home design? Let me tell you.

Today’s housing market is forcing people to pay a market value price that is astronomically high, it’s simple supply and demand, we won’t get into that though. We are seeing people using their home buying power to purchase homes that need to be renovated or even fully remodeled. Many get into their homes and are forced to focus on what to fix, repair or remodel.

If you do not have the means to get the whole house done at once or you only need a to take care of a few things, focus on the things that are going to best serve the dynamic of you and those living in the home. If you work from home, perhaps you need to focus your money on getting a home office setup. Afterall, you need an efficient and comfortable space to do the one thing in your life that helps pay your bills, then focus on other areas of the home that serve a function as opposed to just aesthetic “fluff”. A well designed and comfortable home environment is important but functionality is also just as important.

Another example is if you have a house full of kids who need to be fed. You may want to focus on improving your kitchen so that the other renovations can take place once that main piece of the pie is completed.

The point is, focus on the improvements that will help you function and live well. You will find yourself having more energy to focus on the other repairs and renovations once the main things are taken care of.
