How to create a color palette

Creating a color palette for your home can be a fun and exciting process, but it can also be overwhelming if you don't know where to start. Here are some tips on how we at Fairspring Design create a cohesive color palette for homes or a specific room:

Start with inspiration. Look for inspiration from magazines, Pinterest, or social media for color schemes that you like. Save pictures of rooms that appeal to you and take note of the color combinations.

Identify the purpose of each room. What is the purpose of each room and how do you want it to feel? For example, a bedroom may have a calming and relaxing atmosphere, while a living room may have a more energetic and social vibe. The colors chosen will help enhance the overall feel you are aiming for.

Choose a dominant color. Choose a dominant color that will be the primary color in each room. This color will set the tone for the space, and all other colors will be accents. Neutral colors like white, gray, or beige are excellent choices for dominant colors.

Choose accent colors. Once you have a dominant color, choose two or three accent colors that complement the dominant color. These colors should be used sparingly and strategically to add interest and depth to the space. You can bring these colors in by using throw pillows, wall art, decor objects, rugs, and more.

What is the flow of the space? As you create a color palette for your home, think about the flow of the colors from room to room. The colors should complement each other and create a cohesive look throughout the house. A little test you could do to make sure you are on track for this is by taking a pillow or piece of wall art from one room to the next. If it flows well and matches, you are on it. If it doesn’t and it looks out of place, you might want to rethink a particular color or tone.

Test the colors. Once you have chosen your color palette, it's essential to test the colors in the actual space. Paint samples on the walls and see how they look in different lighting conditions.

Remember, creating a color palette for your home should be a fun and creative process. Don't be afraid to experiment with different color combinations until you find the perfect palette that reflects your style and personality.
