How to make any room feel bigger
If you have a small room or area in your home, try these tips to make it feel bigger.
Use light colors. Light colors such as white, beige, and muted colors can make a room feel larger and brighter. Dark colors tend to absorb light and can make a room feel smaller.
Maximize natural light. Allow natural light into the room by using sheer curtains, removing heavy drapes or blinds, or installing larger windows if remodeling or building new.
Use mirrors. Mirrors can reflect light and make a room feel larger. Hang a large mirror on one of the walls to give the illusion of extra space or, hang directly across a window to create the illusion of a larger space. We love to do this in our design projects.
Declutter. Keep the room free from clutter by only including essential furniture and decor. This will help the room feel more spacious. You can do this by having multiple baskets laying around for toys to be placed in, or consoles and cabinets to store the items you don’t want to see all the time.
Use multi-functional furniture. Choose furniture that serves multiple purposes, such as a sofa bed, a storage ottoman, or a coffee table with storage. This will help to maximize the functionality of the room without taking up too much space.
Create visual depth. Create visual depth by using art or decor that draws the eye towards the back of the room. Hang a large painting or photo gallery on the back wall, or use a patterned rug to create a sense of depth.
Hang curtains high. Hang curtains higher than the window frame to create the illusion of a taller ceiling. This will make the room feel more spacious and draw your eye up.
By following these tips, you can make a small room feel larger, more comfortable, and more inviting.
