What is Transitional Style?

For a while now, I’ve really been digging this blend of new and modern pieces mixed with classic and traditional and a touch of warm and rustic. I feel like the usage of all these textures, colors, and materials really stand the test of time by not being so trendy and going out of style quick. The beautiful thing about mixing the new, the old, and the repurposed is that you can very easily move things around and not have to worry about things not working together. Another reason I am drawn to this aesthetic is probably because it naturally creates a custom look. By adding interesting vintage pieces and brand-new items, you are achieving a more curated atmosphere that feels like an extension of ourselves. Below are a few ways you can get this look with what you probably already have at home, plus maybe branching out of your comfort zone and adding a few more pieces.

Start with neutrals

Stick with neutral tones, mixing different sofa colors and textures. You could use your cream sofa and add a caramel brown leather accent chair. Dark gray sectional would pair well with black and white sofa or accent chairs. Wood tables with brass trays and marble accessories.

Combine colors and materials

Mix your dining room table with new chairs that are in a different color or material than your table. Try a black dining table with light wood chairs or a dark wood table with white or gray fabric chairs. For your centerpiece you could pair an old vintage pot next to a freshly new planted succulent or droopy plant. 

Tie it together with accessories

Old vintage patterned rugs are a great start when it comes to this look. I find that these rugs are a great starting point. You can easily pull from its color scheme and use each color form the rug in other areas in the room(s). Either in pillows, throws, bowls, books, lighting, faux or fresh greenery or flowers.

These are just a few starting tips to help you see how you really can use what you already have and can create a new style without having to replace everything you already have. This is the beautiful thing about transitional pieces, they really can evolve over time with you.
